This Week on The Floor

Interviewing this week? Here’s some food for thought.

If you’re in the US, you’re celebrating Thanksgiving today and talking about all of the things you are thankful for

As part of our celebration here at The Wall Street Skinny, we want to express our gratitude for the wonderful mentors we had in our career.

We wanted to highlight a few of the characteristics that make the best mentors.

Whether you’re trying to identify mentors for yourself or wondering what attributes to emulate as you mentor others, the best mentors are those who:

  • Have the heart of a teacher and are willing to spend time with you to explain things patiently

  • Give you chances to prove yourself in front of more senior people at the firm AND clients

  • Elevate your profile within the firm without you asking them to do so

  • Give you assignments in the framework of opportunity, not punishment

  • Are politically well positioned and are not trying to make big power plays internally. The latter will be too focused on their own careers to give a hoot about yours

  • Have a great reputation not only with upper management but also prior mentees

  • Care about you on a personal level and ask you questions about your family, your passions, your health, your life outside of work, etc.

If I’m going up the corporate ladder, I”m taking you with me!

Concrete examples include:

  • Bringing you into meetings or out to client dinners right from the outset of your career

  • Introducing you to middle and upper management in other groups outside of your immediate reporting vertical

  • Sharing your work or ideas and giving you attribution for your contributions

  • Giving you opportunities to speak or present in internal meetings

  • Nominating you for leadership roles in recruiting and talent development (i.e., interviewing and mentoring summer interns) and asking for your opinion on candidates

  • Spending time with you off the desk formally (i.e., “let’s hop off the desk for 15 minutes and cover any questions you have about that last trade”) and informally (i.e., “let’s grab a beer with research and introduce you to the new V.P. we just hired”)

You can be the most talented, brilliant employee in the world. But without mentors and advocates, your accomplishments may go unnoticed and unrewarded.

Your ability to identify and bond with these individuals is arguably the strongest indicator of your long term success in finance.

A special thanks from the two of us here at The Wall Street Skinny for all the wonderful mentors we’ve had throughout our careers.

Wishing you all a happy Thanksgiving!!

The Wait is OVER!!!

Our Investment Banking and Private Equity Essentials Course is HERE!

This course covers everything (and we mean everything) you need to know to nail the technical parts of investment banking and private equity interviews.

Click here to purchase and get the lowest pricing we will EVER offer.

Here’s everything you’ll get access to for $500 $399:

  • Accounting Essentials: We know “Accounting" might sound dry, but it is the language of Investment Banking. It’s the foundation for all our “sexier” topics: financial modeling, LBO analysis, valuation, and more.

  • Valuation Essentials: This deep dive covers public comps, deal comps, and the discounted cash flow analysis ("DCF"). Create a Football Field (an Investment Banker's valuation summary) for WayStar Royco from Succession to help understand whether GoJo’s $192 offer price from Season 4 of the show is "fair”. You'll get hands-on practice spreading both public comps for a real company AND a precedent transition for an actual deal. You'll then build out an actual DCF for Waystar before completing the football field.

  • Private Equity Essentials: Gain an in-depth understanding of the various types of private equity ("PE") strategies and learn how PE firms make money. Learn the basics of leveraged buyout ("LBO") math, and then build your own full blown circular LBO model in Excel. We wrap up with a paper LBO, diving into the tips and tricks necessary to ace a key part of your IBD and/or PE interview.

  • $100 OFF: The best price that this course will be offered for, ever.

  • Office Hours: For this exclusive cohort, you have the option to participate in 3 supplementary Q&A sessions where we’ll be answering questions we’ve collected from you about each module of the course.

  • FREE BONUS COURSE: “The Industry”: Understanding the World of Wall Street our one-of-a-kind explanation of how Wall Street works and the field of opportunity. It is the X-factor that will set you apart in your interviews and maximize your career potential. Did we mention we charge $7,000 to deliver this in-person at hedge funds and private equity firms? This course will drop in December.
